WCHAN - What does the numeric value really mean?

Dear learned colleagues,

I have been searching the Web and the news groups for an answer to my
problem.

I am sorry if this is a dumb question!

I have an application which is creating a number of un-interruptible
sleeping processes. The WCHAN field of the ps command shows a hexadecimal
number.

All of the literature tells me this is "the address of an event within the
system". OK, I thought I knew a bit about Unix! Obviously not!

What does this mean? How can I determine what event/process is blocking
these processes?

TIA

Paul
