ls -l problems with /vmunix

Gurus,

I have had the "pleasure" of inheriting a few V4.0 878 alpha boxes, for which this happens on all of them. I have an interesting problem.

If I try to do an ls -l in /, the shell session hangs.

If I try a

/usr/bin/file `/usr/sbin/sizer -b`

I get a

vmunix: cannot open for reading

This causes certain daemons like named etc not to start properly, unless they are prioritized in the rc3.d queue.

I am asking if anyone can give me guidance as to where to look for information about this problem, and how to fix it.

Thanks in advance, and I will be more then happy to summarize.

Cian
