Thanks again to those who responded... I got some people that told me it
should
work, but is unsupported. I can't seem to build the driver into the kernel
because
when I boot genvmunix, the unknown nature of the card causes a panic(). I
will be
issuing a Purchase Requisition for something that is supported because the
owner
of the machine says he can't upgrade to 4.0G.
Original question followed by responses follows:
This list is great... I've been a member for years and need some
help today.
I have an AlphaServer 2100A running 4.0D that currently has a
NCR53C810 SCSI card (KZPAA chipset?) that works great. I need
to add another SCSI card and have a NCR53C825 card and although
I can see the card with a >>>SHOW DEVICE, when the system boots
it complains that the chipset for that card is not supported.
I have browsed the archives and found someone using a NCR 875
card with 5.0. Is there a hardware update to use the NCR825
card with 4.0D or does anyone know what version I need to go to
to get it working?
Thank you all in advance - will post follow-up as well,

Arno Hahma:
I am running an NCR-based clone card on 4.0G in a workstation and also
did it on 4.0D some years back. The card is a PCI-SCSI -adapter and the
model is Asus SC-200. If you can get ahold of one, it will probably cost
you less than a few dollars.

As always, the definitive answer from Dr. Tom Blinn:
There is NO update for V4.0D to support the NCR53C825. Period.
The driver for the NCR53C810 (which is the chipset used on the
old Digital KZPAA-AA card, as you surmise) will probably work with
your NCR53C825 card, but it will operate it in NCR53C810 mode, if
it will operate it at all.
If you want to use modern hardware (stuff that was created after
the V4.0D release came out), then you should update to V4.0G (you
can do this for the cost of the media kit) or to V5.1 or later.
Do NOT try to run V5.0 -- it was a mediocre release, pushed out
the door to meet a schedule, and until V5.0A or later you don't
want to be using the V5.x code base. And if you're going to pay
to get to V5.x, don't go to V5.0A, go to V5.1 or V5.1A. However,
bear in mind that V4.0G will probably perform better on your old
AlphaServer 2100A and will work much like V4.0D (except with more
supported hardware options, more functionality, a longer support
life into the future), whereas V5.x works VERY differently, and
you might even find that some applications that you use are not
supported on V5.x (and might not actually work).
