Well there are certainly a lot of ways of skinning this cat.

I was guilty of not stating the problem accurately or giving versions.
In fact I want to get a copy of the data from a live server onto a test
system, rather than a backup, and the problem is getting data to another
server without using much disk space. The OS is Tru 64 5.0.
The suggestions included were
rsync
rsh
rvdump
ssh
rdump
ftp ( I was not sure how to use this with a pipe !)
Because this is a live server, simplicity is the key and rsh is definitely
the way we will go.
I will be looking into rsync for other application though, it looks very
promising.
