GCC compiler error

Hello Everyone

I have one Alpha Xp1000 machine.While loading GCC compiler(/usr/local)
system is giving error "Not enough virtual memory space" and then
oname.o can't be executed".While loading GCC there is one requirement
that u should use only GNU make only.But if I load the same GCC
compilers in some dir other than /usr/local it works perfectly.But I
want to install it in /usr/local dir only .How can I solve this problem
