thousands of files in a directory

On another system, in another time and place, having too many files
in a single directory caused problems. At about 1000 files, performance
degradation began, and IIRC some other problems could result from
over-filled directories.

On a Tru64 4.0f system I have 28,000 small files in a single directory,
which the user insists must stay there, slowly increasing, forever.

We use AdvFS. Is that going to prevent the kind of problems I've experienced
before or not? i.e., can I just let that directory continue to grow and not
worry about it?
