PCI bus distribution in a cage

We have two 12-slot PCI cages on a GS140. Is it true that the 12 slots are grouped into 3 different PCI buses (4 slots per bus)? A compaq field engineer once told me that I should spread the cards among these three groups to improve performance. We have a FDDI, 4 FWD SCSI adapters connected to 7 tape drives on a storage tech silo, two FWD Ultra SCSI adapters connected to 2 ESA10000 cabinets, an internal raid card that has system drive (raid1), internal SCSI card (nothing on it), CDROM and floppy. We are planning to add another raid cabinet. What is the general rule of thumb for distributing the Network, tape and disk adapters? Our current setup is not optimal.

thanks
