reading adlt tape on a sdlt drive

hi,
we have a ds20e,tru64 V5.1A with a MSL5026sl library,and I want to read an old tape dlt III.
How can I do? When I try a mt -f /dev/ntape/tape0 status,The response is: it is a blank media.
