Summary Update: Automating HSG-80 snapshots without using EVM.

I just got in an e-mail from Han Pilmeyer.

Han informs me that there is a best practice related to this topic at http://www.tru64unix.compaq.com/docs/best_practices/BP_SNAPSHOT/TITLE.HTM

He also says that the process can get tricky because you have to know which HSG-80 is serving the data set and issue your commands to that HSG.

==== First Summary

I got 3 responses, all saying to check out "Command Scripter".

====== Orig. quistion

I need to create a HSG-80 based snapshot everyday for auditing purposes.

I'm familiar with the various ACS versions, and with using EVM to manage the snapshot process. (I have only created a snapshot via EVM, never manually, so the below may be way off base.)

I just priced EVM 2.0 and the management appliance it requires to run on. $25K.

That seems pretty expensive for what I assume can be done using cron and some kind of script.

At worst I assume I could connect a serial connection from the Alpha to the HSG-80 and use an Expect script to create the snapshot under cron's control, then mount it and start a separate instance of the database.

Is that logical, or is there a better way to automate this process. (I have a DBA that can figure out the database part. I just need to create and mount the snapshot.)
