Subject : Intergraph MSMT259 (with Cirrus chip) graphics cards under Tru64
5.1a
Not a great result but a pretty clear one.
First of all, the cards concerned, Intergraph MSMT259, are definitely
Powerstorm 4D40. However, Compaq has dropped support for them in the later
versions of Tru64. Not surprising considering their age but a bit
disappointing. Following suggestions from a number of people I tried :
1. The version 4.x 4D40 drivers, setld refuses to install.
2. The 4D50 and 4D60 drivers, these installed but failed to load.
3. The Open3D kit, early versions of this kit included support for the 4D40
however one of the listed features is that kit no longer includes hardware
support !
A number of people suggested replacing the cards with other video cards and
I suspect thats very good advice. Mentioned were :
a) S3 Virage
b) Powerstorm 300
c) Else Gloria
d) Oxygen VX1
The first two would certainly be cheap enough, c) and d) not so.
I am not really going to pursue the matter, the boxes will continue to
perform fine as a mpi test cluster and I'll give up on pinching them
occasionally to be used in our training room.
Thanks a lot to Szabolcs Rumia, Tom Kemp, Joe Fletcher, Octave Orgeron, Tom
Blinn and especially Graham Allan.
