[UPDATE] ES45 troubles

I have an update.

After use of the ES45 System there is a chance the mounting of the CPU will
become loose and unstable. Compaq has a temporary fix in which sleeves can
be applied to stabilize the CPU. April is the projected time frame for when
an actual hardware replacement/fix will be implemented.

Hehe...we just got an ES45 about 2 weeks ago...about halfway into the first
week it started crashing--everytime it crashed it seemed to stay up for less
and less time. We have had everyone that we know in Compaq working on the
problem, and they THINK they MIGHT have solved the issue. We worked very
closely with Annette Thomas (ES45 team leader) as well as some people from
engineering, UNIX support, field support, etc. At first they thought it was
a bad motherboard...so it was replaced. Then they thought it was the
memory...so they replaced it. Actually I think they replaced just about
everything except for the CPUs. We have 4 CPUs in the box, and they found
one that was bad, and replaced it...but the system kept crashing. They
couldn't really find any hard evidence to point at a definite piece of
hardware...so we had them replace ALL the CPUs with new ones, and the system
has been up for almost 24 hours now (previously it hasn't stayed up for more
than a couple of hours...and usually closer to 15 minutes.). They also had
found that one of the KGPSA cards was in an "illegal configuration". Im not
sure what this means, but they said that it had to be in a certain slot on
the bus, so they just moved it over one slot. They said it (the card)
wasn't causing any obvious problems, but figured they would put it in the
correct slot anyway.
I'm not saying that anyone from compaq has any clue what exactly was (is?)
wrong with this machine, but replacing ALL the CPUs was the only thing that
actually seemed to help. We have had people coming in from Compaq for the
past week and a half trying to fix this machine, and today they finally
left, and everything seems to be fine. But honestly, I don't feel very
satisfied...it could crash again tonight. Sure we replaced all the CPUs,
but they were all new to begin with...so who knows if they really fixed the
problem.
I feel terrible that you are starting the journey that I (hopefully) just
finished...it was a terrible terrible time. I hope my story can shed some
light onto the problem you are having. good luck...=/

Hello everyone,

We recently purchased four ES45 systems and have had random system crashes
since they were brought online.

I am currently working with Compaq Support on this issue, and was wondering
if anyone else has heard the 'rumor' of there being a design flaw in the
backplane?

Any additional information would be helpful.
