Compaq TZ891 head problems

Hello Managers,
Approx. 2 years ago we bought a Compaq TL891 DLT minilibrary from Compaq.
The product is equipped with a single drive. We use the TL891 to backup one
of our databases and the average use is approx. 1 1/2 hour/day (30 GB/day).
Since a few weeks we experience some strange behavior. Almost every other
day the "Use cleaner" LED Indicator comes on, indicating that we need to
clean the drive.
We have raised this issue to Compaq and their response is that head is not
properly aligned and that it cannot be fixed. They only thing that can be
done is to replace the complete drive; estimated cost: 6.7 K USD !

Besides the illuminating "Use cleaner" LED we don't experience other
problems with this product and the backup/restore of data is just working
fine. (I would expect that a not properly aligned head would cause other
problems, like write-errors or a degraded write performance).

My question:
1. Is Compaq conclusion correct. Is a not properly aligned head causing this
problem.
2. If so, can the head not be aligned anymore.

Thanks & regards,
Tom Zuurbier
