Using gnumake solved the problems in my original post.

However, since the original post I have discovered a 4.0f binary on
sourceforge that works perfectly (they also have a v5.1 binary).

                Original Post

                Dear Managers,
Has anybody succeeded with the install of mysql 3.23.49
(source) on TRU64 v4.0f PK7 / Alpha ES40?

I have tried various ./configures which appear to complete
successfully. However, the make's always fall-over.

The usual error message is ...

                No suffix list.
                make all-recursive
                No suffix list.
                Making all in include
                No suffix list.
Make: % rule can only use a single ':'. Stop.
                *** Exit 1
                Stop.
                *** Exit 1
                Stop.

                Any advice would be appreciated.

                Cc or gcc?
                Make of gnumake?

                Thanks
                Frank
