Hi,
In the process of attempting to diagnose a system hang, I need to produce a
crash dump. As I understand it, all you need to do is press the "Halt"
button, then enter "crash" at the SRM prompt. (There are some other things
to look out for, but this is the basic idea.) My problem is getting the
machine to respond to pressing "Halt": This action has no effect on our
DS20 or DS20E. So I'm stuck with pressing "Reset"; entering "crash" after
this seems to have no effect. (See, however, Alan Davis' thorough reply
"RE: getting info after a crash", dated 20 Oct 2000, in the archives for
other ways to produce a crash dump.)
Back to the "Halt" button: Is there anything that needs to be enabled to
allow this button to have an effect? I think some systems must have their
key in the "enable" position for this to work -- at least that's what I
recall seeing for using control-P to halt a system. Another entry in the
archives hinted that a hardware problem -- perhaps the same problem that
caused the hang -- could prevent the "Halt" button from working; however, I
think our hang is caused by a problem in user-written software that
accesses 3rd party software.
Thanks, and will summarize...
