Hi Managers

I would like to thank "Thursday" AKA dr. john and Jim Belonis for
responding.
Jim Belonis suggested that it might be shared memory problem.
I have increased shared memory amount, it didn't help.
And X documentation doesn't say anything about shared memory and/or
recommended values.

It wasn't a card as I originally thought, because other cards didn't
work either.

I tried to use cde and xdm, both come back with the same error,
that they couldn't start X server.
X server doesn't have error log file of its own
(at least I couldn't locate it in any documentation).
So I have no idea what it didn't like.
I have checked authorizations, configurations,
installed new OS on another hard drive and diff-ed everything I could.

Eventually I have reinstalled OS and rebuild the system.
It's got everything now that it had originally, except for Apache and
Samba,
I wonder if they might be a culprit...

Anyway, only one word springs to mind: disappointment.
I think I shouldn't complain about Windows too much.

Well, I wish your X server never breaks down.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
xdm starts with the following error messages in xdm-errors file:

Hung in XOpenDisplay(:0), aborting
server open failed for :0, giving up
Display :0 cannot be opened
Display :0 is being disabled
Screen 0 PowerStorm 4D10T (Permedia-2 8Mb) - PseudoColor, 8 bpp,
1280x1024, 75Hz=20
shminit (1023f, 192a, 0r)

I couldn't get CDE running either, it was never able to come up with
login box, exactly like xdm.
