Once again this list has made my life easier (consequently, it's easier
for my users as well). First, special thanks to those that responded so
quickly to my question.

The first response I received that solved the problem was from Dr.
Thomas Blinn. As it turns out, the real problem was my ignorance. On
most of the Unix systems I work with, my login shell is the Borne shell
(/usr/bin/sh). On the particular system in question, my login shell is
the "C" shell (/usr/bin/csh). Dr. Blinn pointed out that the ulimit
command does not control the limits if my login shell is the "C" shell
(D'oh!). C shell has a built in command called "limit." When I issued
the command, "limit stacksize 600000" the change took effect. I noticed
the change by just typing limit before and after setting the stacksize.

Cheers,
