Thanks to all! The answer to my question is yes with backing up as a good
idea.

Subject: wtmp is HUGE - Can I delete it?
Good morning,
This morning I am experiencing a problem with our DEC computer. When I
checked the df -k on the system, the /usr and /var directories were at 100%.
In checking further, the wtmp file under /usr/var/adm is over 10 gigs. Can I
delete this file? There are other huge files as well (binary.errorlog and
messages). Can these be cleared too?
