Out of band connection to console ports

We have remote systems (Tru64 v4.0f, alphaserver GS140s, ES40s, ESA10000s)
that have their console ports connected to ports on a Cisco 2511 router that
we are using for out of band access. This works great when it works,
but we are finding that access hangs up shortly after a reboot, and then
we can't ever get to the system again via OOB till the next reboot, when
connection via the serial port is restored for awhile. I'm wondering
if this has something to do with the "getty" process running on the
console port:

        cons:1234:respawn:/usr/sbin/getty console console vt100

and if I need to modify this in some way. Does anyone have any
experience with a similar config, or any clues as to what to do
to allow console access to stabilize and persist?

TIA,
