sendmail problem

I am seeing something really peculiar with sendmail 8.12.2. Im getting
messages bounced back to root that cant be delivered on the local
machine. The really odd part of it is the user is a user that has been
completely removed from the machine so sendmail shouldnt even see the
user. However if you telnet to localmachine 25 and issue an expn
username you get back a response. For one user that I checked I get
back what used to be in his .forward file and that is where sendmail is
trying to deliver mail for him.

I have checked the alias file and there is nothing there. I have issued
a edauth -g username and get nothing back. Where else could the system
be storing this information?

Im running Tru64 5.1 on an ES40 and as stated above sendmail 8.12.2.

Any ideas appreciated....
