Thanks to James Sainsbury,
who pointed that rdist uses rsh to connect, and thus .rhosts rules apply.
In my case, traffic was routed differently for different boxes.
So, some remote boxes saw alternative network link name, not primary one of my box.
And that alternative name wasn't in .rhosts.
BTW, rdist man pages don't even mention rsh!

It's probably some silly problem I am having here.
I am doing simple copying of one file to a number of Tru64 boxes.
Most of them are done fine, on some I am getting messages
"Permission denied.
rdist: Check rdist availability/permissions on "box name"."
I couldn't find any differences between successful boxes and unsuccessful ones.
The updated file has same date, permissions. rdist exists everywhere.
Same version of Tru64 4.0f.
But anyway, I am missing something, obviously.
Any clues?
