virtual IP, non-clustered?

Is it possible to set up a virtual IP similar to a cluster alias
shared by a pair of machines that are not a cluster? We have
a pair of web servers that we want to load balance, and such an
alias seems an ideal way to do it -- outside of expensive hardware
load balancers.

The machines are DS20s running Tru64 5.1 -- they are not connected
to a SAN, each has it's own disk shelf etc.

thanks,
-charlie
