Unix Error

We are running Tru64 v5.1 with no patches on a 2 ES40 cluster with an HSG80.
This is running an Oracle 8.1.7 (no patches) database. We are getting async
read/write failed error to the Oracle control file. There is a Compaq Tru64
Unix error 78: function not implemented. Can anyone explain what this means?
