Thanks for all of your (very!) quick replies.
The consensus of opinion was that auto-negotiation should be turned off on
both the switch and the Alphas, and set to half duplex. I have no doubt
this is the solution to many similar network problems, but in our case we
couldn't set the ports on the switch to a particular speed etc. Luckily,
this wasn't the problem...
It turned out that, unbeknown to me, someone was using a mini-hub to
connect two PC's to the switch. Removing that connection sorted the
problem out, and closer inspection revealed that the mini-hub was, in
fact, broken. A new mini-hub was purchased and all is well.
Why the problem only affected the DEC Alphas is still a mystery, however.
