Thanks to all those who replied. Turns out to be a newbie error on my
part (idiot!).
setting boot_osflags to "a" fixes the problem and it goes multiuser :-)
sorry for the wasted bandwidth (still, heard from a few old colleagues so
I guess it was worth it!)
