Thanks to "Brusche, Johan" <Johan.Brusche_at_hp.com>, who suggested it
could be NIS trouble.

YPBind seemed to be having trouble, and checking uid's to names was
failing, hence taking forever to come back with the full information.
Manually killing ypbind and restarting it cured the problem.
