mixed speed discs on SCSI bus

Dear Tru64 experts,

I am about to buy a new disc to an Alphaserver 4100 but was slightly
thrown out when one of the suppliers hinted that having discs of different
speeds on the same SCSI bus might cause problems. First of all he said
there would be no benefit from getting a disc faster than the existing
discs (because access speed would be slowed down to that of the slowest
disc), and then he vaguely hinted at other problems.

Is there any truth in this? I am not running RAID or striping, just ADVFS
under Tru64 4.0G . The discs are all Compaq/DEC approved and they go in a
split-bus UltraSCSI StorageWorks shelf for a pedestal enclosure.

Regards,
Bob
