The first step is installing the proper firmware. The Compaq Firmware CD
does not provide the correct files and
thinks the system is a DS20. If the usual instructions are followed, a
system is left without a working srm console
(not recommended).
Only Kurt A Ludwig (-frmr systems admin, API NetWorks Inc.), and I
cannot thank him enough, put me on the right track.
The reference for the latest firmware for UP2000 motherboards is
http://www.linuxalpha.org/firmware/api/UP2000/archive/up2000_srm-A5.8-65beta.tar.gz
(beta is ok).
The tar unfolds three files: readme.1st, up2000fw.txt and up20srm.rom
The latter two have to be copied to
a floppy (yes a Windows PC is the right thing).
Following the instructions in the readme.1st put the correct srm in.
After power cycling and setting onboard_adaptec disabeled, the AIC 7891
Adaptec SCSI chip is not seen by the
system anymore and Tru64 boots off the CD.
A PCI based SCSI controller is needed.
