NFS problems on a GS140

I have what feels like a slow NFS connection problem with a GS140 running
5.1. This is the NFS server for a number of SGI clients. If I untar an
archive of size 26MB on the server, it takes about 8 sec (on a HSZ70
multivolume disk). However when I do it sitting on an SGI O200 server (where
this disk is NFS mounted), it takes 2mins and 45 secs. Somehow I feel this
is not right. It doesn't matter which SGI client I am doing it on. It is
very slow. The SGI and Alpha servers are on 100MBt FDDI connections and I
don't see any network problems (using ping with options). The NFS UDP
threads is set at 64 on the Alpha server and at the time I did the test
there were 62 idle threads. The mount flags I use on the SGI machine are
nfs rw,bg,soft 0 0

Is there something else I can do to further probe this?

thanks
SS
