Authentication advise - samba

Hi Managers,

Tru64 5.1 with base security, Compaq DS10, Samba 2.2.0.

I am after some advice on authentication on the above configuration. I need to allow
mswin users access to services on the above box. I do not want to allow all of them to
telnet onto it but I would like to be able to centrally administer their passwords and
hence network access to the samba shares. I have played around with user-level
security but am not entirely sure what is the best approach.

There is a NT PDC on the LAN but I do not want to use that for authentication. I
would like all the users authenticated my the samba or tru64 system. I have heard
PAM mentioned in some articles but thought there might be a solution without adding
another server to the system.

Is it possible to use samba with either user or server level security and have Nologin
for individual users in the /etc/passwd file? Has anyone done this or have any strong
feelings on the matter?

Thanx.
Dp.
