SUMMARY: Availability of libpthread.a

 A big thanks to all who replied so promptly: Thomas Blinn, Johan Brusche,
Octave Orgeron,
 Dan Riley, Peter Stern and Keith Texel.
  
 Had I read the 4.0F release notes more carefully :-| I would have seen
that the static version of the pthread library is no longer part of the
standard installed libraries for 4.0F -the reason being that the pthread
support in the kernel has changed/does change a fair amount, and it is much
safer to use the shared library (libpthread.so).

The static version is however still available in the CMPDEVENH440 subset for
4.0F - but see the README with that for reasons why it is not advisable to
use it.
It was brought back by popular demand into 5.x (explaining why we had no
problems compiling on 5.1a) - but with the above caveats.

 Other suggestions - could use the Solaris Compatibility package from
Compaq/HP - in the Linux Affinity Tools area.
