Thanks to Jay Nash for this reply. When I retried the install/upgrade,
everything went fine, so I'm guessing that a stray character got into the
fstab.
Your system was not able to boot the usr and var file
system....
As it could not get proper device names or links in
/etc/fdmns( if advfs file system selected)..
You need to reboot the system in single user
mode..check /etc/fstab and links in /etc/fdmns
run
bcheckrc ( To see if it mounts the file system
properly and then press ctrl+D)
