booting off SAN disk?

In relation to the problems I had the other day which caused me pain and
a rebuild of a system disk, I'm looking into eliminating the extra layer of
LSM from the systems involved and moving the disks to the HSG80 based SAN.

When I was preparing to rebuild the system, I tried to move the disks to the

SAN and then boot the installer CD to try and install to them. I could see
the disks in the installer, but not from "show dev" at the >>> prompt, nor
did
they appear in the list of disks to use as the primary system disk for the
install.

Is it possible to install like this? Is there something that I need to do
before
I can?

The systems in question in this particular instance are ES40s and the OS is
5.1A.
