Thanks to all who responded. All of you said the same thing which, as I
had suspected, is that the XP1000 takes memory 4 DIMMS per bank. My spare
Alpha PWS memory might well work but only with the addition of 2 more
DIMMs. The definitive answer from Jay Vlack at HP Support:
> The XP1000 takes buffered JEDEC 21-C and PC100 standard SDRAM DIMM
> memory. The DIMMs must be installed four at a time (one array), and each
> DIMM in an array must be identical. Array0 consists of slots J5 through
> J8, and Array1 consists of slots J1 through J4. Only DIMMs qualified by
> Compaq/HP are guaranteed to work.
thanks,
john

-----Original Question-----
hi all -
i've just acquired an XP1000 with 128MB memory which occupies 4 of the 8
memory slots. from another XP1000 i have a spare 128MB, again 4x32MB
SIMMs/DIMMs/whatever. i also have a spare 256MB (2x128MB) of Alpha PWS
memory. so the question is, can i use the 256MB of PWS memory in the
XP1000 or does it have to take a specific sort of memory that comes in
sets of 4 ?
thanks,
john
