I had one response with some helpful information - I choice the quickest method and used vdump. Everything was backed up within 40 minutes.

I am on a DS20 running COMPAQTRU64 V5.1.
cpio taking three hours
The total space taken up by the directories is 6062378 KB (displayed by a df -k command).
The command I used is
find . -print | cpio -ov -O/dev/ntape/tape1_d1
I am backing up to a Compaq 35/70 GB tape unit on to a DLT.
