I have a tape in a drive that reports

Error on device named /dev/nrmt1h - Place TZ89 tape drive unit #73 ONLINE

when I tried to rewind it.

I tried a mt -f /dev/nrmt1h online

which just froze, can't Ctrl C it or kill the process with kill -9.

I have just kill the session it was runnning in but that has just given it a parent of 1.

Is a reboot the only way to kill this process or is there another way.

The process isn't clocking up any time.

$ ps -ef | grep nrmt
root 9438 1 0.0 09:11:17 ttypf 0:00.01 mt -f /dev/nrmt1h online

I believe that the tape could be knackered.

Help please
