Thanks to Ian Barker and Dr. Blinn for coming up with a quick
answer.
The easiest solution is to set bootdef_dev to "" before the install.
This keeps the installer from picking up the 5.lb configuration and
attempting to use it with 5.1a.

Subject: Can't install 5.1a on ES40
We just bought an ES40 that came preloaded with 5.1b, but we need to
install 5.1a to do some software testing.
I went through the install and everything went OK until it tried to
reboot. Then I got "Cannot open or read /etc/dfsc.dat Bad status file
device/format". Same message for /etc/dsfl.dat, then it went into
single-user mode.
When I did "hwmgr -show scsi", it came up with the four 9-gb disks
that we have, but no device paths to them.
Do I need to install a NHD kit or something to support the hardware?
thanks
