password lifetime expired

Hi,
        I have an old UNIX 4.0D box that I haven't had to touch in
apparently 2 years. I couldn't log in, so I did a reset and
                boot -fl s
                /sbin/bcheckrc
                passwd root

I then get the message password not changed, password lifetime expired. Any
help would greatly be appreciated.
