Hi,
Thanks to the fine folks at HP, the answer to the NFS permission problem is
a bug:

"It looks like when we fixed a problem where we were crashing
because there was too much information in the mode passed back from
some NFS clients to our NFS server we trucated the mode
too far and lost the setuid and setgid bits. This problem is
specific to NFS V3. The "fix" went into the patch kits for all
versions, so if you had stayed at V4.0F and gone to the newest
patch kit you would have seen it there as well."

The fix for the "fix" could be in the first patch kit release after the
first of the year.
