I got no responses on this subject, so I had to do a lot of work here! :-)
my question was:

It turns out that the problem is not in the DDR.DBASE but in the fact that
the Quantum SDLT drive is not compatible with the Qlogic SCSI controller on
our AS800 :-(
I tried to put controller and tape drive on a DS10 with Tru64 5.1b and that
failed too!
End result is that we bought a new DLT-1 drive, installed it, and it looks
like it works ok now!
