Quoting from one of the replies:

known bug: apache finds the library twice and has everything defined
twice."
and in fact that was the case, since the directory I download stuff into is
on a different machine to the one that it gets installed into. With NFS,
it's easy to forget things like that....
Moving the tar into a directory on the same machine as the installation
target directory allowed the make and install to run smoothly. I did this
on two machines, one with gcc-3.3.2 and the other with just the default C
compiler and it was fine on both (although slower using gcc).
