I got 2 answers quite immediately. Thanks al lot to
Smith, Lawrie [Lawrie.Smith_at_capita.co.uk] - first anwser
Tim Cutts [tjrc_at_sanger.ac.uk] - the winner
Lawrie a script for korn93 which I should download from
http://www.kornshell.com/ and install.
Much easier is the solution of Tim: There is a command "fold" which does
exactly the job I want:
fold -w80 inputfile >outputfile
Thanks al lot guys. This list is great.

Betreff: File with 1 very long line
Hi admins,
I am sure you can give me some hints.
An application created a file with one line which is very long. The user
wants to split these line into shorter ones (say 80 characters). I guuess I
must insert linefeed character behind each 80th character, right?
How can I do this?
Thanks in advance.
