Dear all!
Please excuse my long delay in posting this summary, but my RAID box was
temporarily unavailable.
Thanks to:
Allan Rollow, Udo de Boer, Iain Barker, Bob Harris, Dr Thomas Blinn, John
Lanier.
I received the follwing information/suggestions:
- - The disk size limit was lifted from 1TB to 2TB "rather recently", some
tools may not yet have been update, e.g., diskconfig, leading it to
display negative sizes for disks > 1TB.
Since my RAID system is my backup system, I want to be sure it works,
so I split the 1.2TB "disks" on my RAID box into 600GB partitions and
export each as a separate SCSI disk device. Configuring these with
diskconfig was no problem.
- - Device names can be reused to avoid gaps in the disk numbering scheme,
e.g. using "dsfmgr -e newname oldname". The Tru64 Hardware Management
manual, Sept. 2002, discussed name changes and renumbring in sections
1.5.3.5 and 1.5.3.6. Most of those who replied suggested to refrain
from device name fiddling, if avoidable.
The four virtual SCSI disks exported by my RAID box were now placed nicely
as dsk10 to dsk13, so I decided not to renumber.
- - I noticed some interesting behavior when trying to register the new SCSI
devices with "hwmgr scan scsi". Three out of four devices were immediately
recognized as disks and pertaining disk special files created. The fourth
was recognized, but flagged with "inconsistencies". I had to delete this
device with "hwmgr delete scsi -did ...", and then run "hwmgr scan scsi"
again. Then also the fourth device was recognized properly.
For completeness: I am running V5.1B on a GS1280, with a KZPEA two-channel
SCSI controller. The RAID box is an Infortrend EonStor A16U with two
SCSI channels; two virtual disks are exported on each channel.
Thanks for your help!
Hans
