Using getty with Lantronix SCS1600

I'm trying to establish a serial connection for remote console
access using a Lantronix SCS1600 and getty with an entry
in /etc/inittab.

The Lantronix port is defined:
standard RS-232
9600 baud
no parity
8 bit bytes
1 stop bit
hardware flow control only

Various getty commands haven't worked and

tty00:23:respawn:/usr/sbin/getty /dev/tty00 9600 vt100

in /etc/inittab doesn't work either.

I need some pointers about how to get this to work
on a 4.0g system.
