Besides the standard suggestions of using a better and more modern mail
client than /bin/mail (I suggest pine :
http://www.washington.edu/pine/), and of arranging your mail in folders
by topics or projects instead of keeping it all in the inbox in the
spool area ...

... you should be aware that mail folders, like /usr/spool/mail/wfmprod,
are plain text files which can be edited with any text editor.

Their format is approximately this :

1) one "unix from" line, e.g. in a format like this

   From xxxx_at_yyy.bo.cnr.it Wed Jun 6 10:41:58 2001

i.e. starting with the word From followed by a blank with no
semicolon (IT IS NOT *REPEAT NOT* the "From:" header line) !!

This is always the first line of a message

2) several header lines. They are either in the form of an header
keyword (terminated by a semicolon) and followed by a value, like

   From: Steve Hubert <hubert_at_washington.edu>
   To: Pine Announcement List <pine-announce_at_u.washington.edu>
Subject: Pine 4.58 is now available

or can be continuation lines (the first character(s) is/are blank,
   like)

Received: (from xsaops_at_localhost)
        by xsa01.vilspa.esa.es (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id gAEBqVZM002396;
        Thu, 14 Nov 2002 11:52:31 GMT

3) the first BLANK line terminates the header

4) the body of the message follows. It may contain any text, and any
number of blank lines. However no lines will start with the word
"From" followed by a blank. If such thing occurs, the mail s/w will
automatically convert it as ">From " (and back to "From " when
   displaying it).

5) the message terminates with a blank line followed by the Unix From
(see 1 above) line of the next message (or the end of file)

So you can split the folder at any point which is the start of a message
(i.e. at its Unix From line).
