Performance decrease in 5.1B1 compared to 4.0G

Our backups were and still are based upon cpio (long story why but I can't
change right now to another utility).

In 4.0G the backups were taking about 2.5-3 hours. In 5.1b1 they are
taking about twice as long. Has anybody else experienced this?
