SUMMARY: Changing root account name

Thanks to Tom Linden, Marc Baudoin, Dr. Thomas Blinn, Marc Schlensog, Piotr
Grzybowski, Bruce Senn, and Tim Cutts for their responses. It seems that
the consensus is that I don't not want to remove the root account (bad
things will happen) and I can create another user with uid 0 (not
recommended either). The reason for this post is because the last system
audit we went through one of the items that came up was "no vendor supplied
accounts are to be used on the system." The rational for that is it makes it
harder to hack into the system if you don't know the root account. However
my recommendation will be that we don't change this, because the bad out
weighs the good.

Thanks again,

Chris

Subject: Changing root account name

Admins,

Is it possible to change the name of the root account (so as to login with
something other than root) and still not lose functionality?

TIA,
