Process stuck at 99% and cannot kill it

On a dual-CPU DS20E (5.1b pk4) I have a process stuck at 99% CPU.

I tried to kill it with 'kill -9', it just carries on regardless.

(It's just 'ar' packaging some object files, nothing too complex)

Any ideas other than a reboot?
