Thanks to James Sainsbury and Paul Gallop who replied.
James sent me lists of things to check until the probelm was solved.
The basic problems were that the ypserver map was not updated on the
master to reflect the new slave and that the new slave was configured
(in /etc/rc.config) as a "CLIENT" instead of a "SLAVE".
Everything works now as it should.
