Thanks to Joseph Senulis and Dr. Blinn for their replies.
It was suggested that support for the drive may have been retired,
but I have been unable to confirm that. It is listed in a support matrix
for 4.0f which I located at
http://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/DECinfo/.2/SPD/41-61-XX.txt and after
reviewing the release notes for all versions since then, I cannot find that
the device was retired. However, others have had trouble getting it to work
with v5.1a.
It is possible that the problem may have been fixed in a patch kit
since pk4, but since we have to go through an in-house approval process
before we can install a newer patch kit, I didn't research that.
In this case, where we are still able to read the 9-track tapes on
the drive, the solution is to begin writing the tapes to a 4mm drive.
