Workstation goes to sleep?

We have a Digital AlphaStation 600 5/266 which was working fine up
until recently. A few weeks ago, it started to become unreachable at
random times. We couldn't ping, rsh or access the disk which is nfs
mounted on our server. Sometimes it was unreachable for a short time
(hours), usually it just wouldn't respond until I rebooted. Then I
discovered that if I accessed this workstation directly from it's
console, it would "wake up." For example, I would try to login, it
would accept my userid and passwd, hang for a couple of minutes until
the login completed and then everything would be fine. Is it possible
that something in the system settings is letting the disk spin down -
some sort of power saving mode? Has anybody else seen this behavior or
have an explanation. I find no error messages in the error logs.

Happy New Year,
Peter
